National Monument for Military Working Dog Teams
President Barack Obama signed legislation into public law authorizing the John Burnam Monument Foundation, Inc. (JBMF, Inc.) to build and maintain a national monument to honor the service and sacrifice pf the United States Armed Forces Military Working Dog Teams that served from World War II to the present wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is the first time in U.S. military history that an animal (dog) has been elevated to national monument status by congressional law.
JBMF, Inc. is working directly with the legislative sponsor, U.S Representative Walter B. Jones (NC-3), and the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Pentagon). The national monument’s architectural design has been approved and the search for a suitable site in the Washington DC metro area is underway. The congressional legislation stipulates that this national monument must be paid for by public donations and grants.
