Since 2003 I have been with Animal Care Clinic.  As the Medical Director of Animal Care Clinic, my passion is to provide the highest standard of medical care for your pets.  I see your pets as members of your family and I am committed to delivering compassionate care.  In addition to helping dogs and cats, I enjoy working with exotic pets (turtles, birds, iguanas, fish, snakes, ferrets, geckos, chameleons, just to name a few).  During your pet’s examination I work hard to get to know your family pet and help you establish a vaccination and treatment plan, based on your pet’s individual needs.  If your pet is sick, I will be there to go over your treatment options and offer the best treatment plan to make your pet feel better.

Before coming to Animal Care Clinic, I had the privilege of treating animals in many other settings.  I am one of only a few veterinarians to receive a Cancer Research Training Award from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health.  As a Post Doctoral Fellow, I was part of a team that studied and developed a cure for an inherited form of cancer in dogs.  A similar cancer occurs is children and was always fatal until we developed this cure using bone marrow transplants.

I also have had the opportunity to work with marine mammals, including dolphins and manatees, as well as sharks, sting-rays, sloths, toucans, during my time as a Research Fellow with Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.

I am a Veteran of the United States Army Reserve, Veterinary Corps.  While I was a veterinary student, I took the opportunity to take special training in treating cancer at the University of Wisconsin and North Carolina State University, as well as zoo animal medicine at the San Francisco Zoo.

Dr Smith is a 1989 graduate from the veterinary school at Virginia Tech. While a full-time student, he worked as a research assistant, maintaining a collection of approximately 100 aquaria, and later, performing surgery and behavioral testing on rats used in Alzheimer’s disease research. Dr Smith concentrated his studies primarily on pet animal medicine and surgery, but also pursued elective training in exotic and avian medicine. He was elected to membership in the Phi Zeta Honor Society and graduated with honors.

During his career as a small animal veterinarian, he has worked as an emergency room clinician, studied pet dentistry, and broadened his knowledge of exotic pet practice to include fish, primates and other unusual species Dr Smith is currently the Treasurer and acting President of the South Hampton Roads Veterinary Medical Association, and is a long-standing member of the American Veterinary and Virginia Veterinary Medical Associations, and the Tidewater Veterinary Academy.

Dr Smith and his wife Betsy are active members of the local Spring Branch Community Church. He still finds time for outside interests as an amateur musician, artist, and calligrapher. Dr Smith has an especial fondness for cats and has just rescued a second kitten.
